St Helens' departing head coach Nathan Brown labelled the club’s Grand Final success over Wigan Warriors as the "greatest experience" of his life.

The former Huddersfield coach who impressed with both the Giants and Saints has decided to call time on his stint in England to work back home in Australia.

Few gave Saints a hope of toppling Wigan at Old Trafford, however second-half tries from Sia Soliola and Tommy Makinson turned the game around after Joe Burgess struck for the Warriors on the stroke of half time.

"It's a great occasion. I'm just happy for all the fans and the players," he said. "For the wife and kids to see it... that's a fitting way to go home.

"Credit to the guys, they hung in there, dug in there and gave it a crack, and we came away with a great result.

James Roby admitted St Helens had to fight hard for their victory

"Full credit to the group. St Helens have had a wonderful culture for a lot of years and I got brought in to restructure the squad, to move a lot of people out and to blood a lot of younger blokes.

"But the key was to retain that winning culture which Wellens, Robes (James Roby), Jon Wilkin, Jonny Lomax and the guys who have been at the club a long time maintain.

"From a coach's point of view, to come and work at this club has been the greatest experience of my life."

Wigan were forced to play the vast majority of the contest with 12 men after Ben Flower was shown the Grand Final’s first-ever red card for punching Lance Hohaia.
