Leeds playmaker Danny McGuire has backed his decision not to play for England in the Autumn Series and have an extended break.

The 29-year-old Rhinos half-back made himself unavailable to head coach Steve McNamara for the end-of-season Tests against Wales and France.

"That was probably one of the reasons I decided not to play for England this year. Probably selfishly, it is the best thing for me at this time."

McGuire endured a stop-start Super League campaign due to injury and the experienced campaigner believes the extra rest will benefit him in 2013.

"I've had plenty of time to relax and I've been on holiday as well," McGuire told the Yorkshire Evening Post. "I am looking forward to getting back into pre-season and kicking off next year.

"That was probably one of the reasons I decided not to play for England this year. Probably selfishly, it is the best thing for me at this time.

"I've had a few niggly injuries, I carried my knee a little bit towards the back end of the season and I think the best thing I could have done was have a break.

"Now hopefully I can come back firing for Leeds next year and have a really good season."
