Wigan v Leeds: Warriors were brilliant in defence, says Shaun McRae

Wigan's defence was the reason they overcame Leeds and made the Super League Grand Final, says Shaun McRae.

The Warriors beat reigning champions the Rhinos 22-12 at the DW Stadium on Friday night to secure a showpiece clash against Warrington, with Josh Charnley, Darrell Goulding, Liam Farrell and Iain Thornley scoring tries.

"All 17 Wigan players went out there and did their job, it was as simple as that."

But Sky Sports pundit McRae was impressed by Wigan's rearguard and the way they kept Leeds - who have won the Grand Final in five of the last six seasons - at bay.

"[Wigan coach] Shaun Wane will demand perfection but you are not going to get that in any game of rugby league and are going to have the odd mistake and error," said the former Salford coach.

"There were a couple of offensive things that they didn't execute, but I thought they played pretty well and defensively they were outstanding and didn't give Leeds any latitude at all."

Stevo added: "All 17 Wigan players went out there and did their job, it was as simple as that.

"They were patient, creative when they needed to be and Blake Green and Matty Smith have proved people wrong and showed that they can make Wigan a great side."

McRae, meanwhile, thinks Wigan and Warrington - whose duel you can watch on Sky Sports next Saturday - are worthy finalists and says he is struggling to choose a victor ahead of the Old Trafford showdown.

"You might feel sorry for Huddersfield as they won the League Leaders' Shield and have been the most consistent all year, but they didn't have the experience of Wigan and Warrington," said McRae.

"Huddersfield will learn from that, while Leeds just ran out of petrol and the two combatants in the Grand Final deserve to be there - and a winner is hard to pick."
