Leeds Rhinos head coach Brian McDermott insists the young stars already in the fold will help the club impress this campaign.

Leeds take on a new-look Hull KR - who have made 13 new signings - on Sunday week and will be looking to banish the bad memories of the 2014 campaign.

The Rhinos lost their last five matches of the regular season to finish sixth and crashed out of the play-offs at the first hurdle after suffering a first-ever home defeat to Catalans Dragons.

McDermott has plenty of room under the salary cap to strengthen, with Australian prop Adam Cuthbertson the club’s only close-season recruit, but for now is content to promote from within.

The 44-year-old is happy for the club's youngsters to help plug the gaps created by the departures of Ben Jones-Bishop, Ian Kirke, Ryan Bailey and Chris Clarkson.

"I'd be hesitant to bring in someone in front of Brad Singleton, Josh Walters or Liam Sutcliffe and then you start looking at the lads below those like Ash Handley, Robbie Ward and Elliott Minchella, that's where the future is for us.

"If you look at what the squad will look like in five or six years' time, some of these fellas will have to be seasoned professionals by then.

"We all know what's going to happen to this squad in the next two, three and four seasons - a whole host of some of the best players in a generation will retire - and it's up to us to make sure that the fellas who take over have got 70 or 80, maybe 100 Super League games under their belt.

"We haven't brushed anything under the carpet but at the same time we're not re-inventing the wheel. We're confident we've re-energised ourselves and we can't wait for it."
