Adam Lawton is to take a sabbatical from his Super League commitments with Widnes Vikings.

A statement on the club's website read: "The Vikings can confirm that they have been approached by the player who has requested a period of leave from his existing contract."

Widnes will retain his registration should the 21-year-old forward decide to return to Super League but the club have reported on their website he is set ‘to take an extended break to Australia.’

Vikings chief executive James Rule said: “We obviously respect Adam’s request and want to provide him with the opportunity to move to Australia and away from the rigours of playing professional rugby league with Widnes Vikings.

“We accepted Adam’s request but he will remain contracted with the club. Widnes Vikings will retain his registration.

“By retaining Adam’s registration and contract, the door remains open for Adam should he wish to return to Super League in the future.”
