Sale Sharks will warm up for the 2014/15 Aviva Premiership season with a pre-season friendly against Super League's Salford Red Devils at the AJ Bell Stadium.

The contest, which will be held on August 26, will be a match of two halves, with one half played with Rugby Union rules and the other as to Rugby League rules.

It will not be the first time the codes have clashed. In 1996 more than 62,000 attended a double header between Bath and Wigan at Maine Road and Twickenham.

The most recent cross-codes clash was between Sale and St Helens at Knowsley Road in 2003. The Sharks edged out St Helens 41-39, halting a dramatic second-half comeback from the league club.

Both teams are packed with international talent and it will be interesting to see how the likes of Sale's Mark Cueto, Danny Cipriani and captain Dan Braid perform in rugby league.

Stars on show

Salford, under the guise of ambition owner, have star-studded names of their own and Rangi Chase, Samoa's Lama Tasi, and England's most-capped player Adrian Morley will look to try their hand at union.

Steve Diamond, Sale Sharks director of rugby, said: "Everyone at Sale Sharks is very excited about taking on our friends and rivals in League.

"Our players will definitely be up for the challenge and I'm sure our fans will be there making plenty of noise".

Salford Red Devils head coach Brian Noble, added: "This is a great opportunity for our guys to pit their skills against different athletes.

"It will be a big challenge but I think they'll relish it. The fact that this is for two such fantastic causes is going to be a big motivator for both teams."
