Salford Red Devils owner Marwan Koukash has hit out at the Rugby Football League (RFL) and says Super League owners should have a greater say on the game.

The RFL failed to secure a sponsor for Super League in 2013 and no deal has yet been announced with the new season due to begin in February.

"Super League needs to have a greater control of its own destiny. It's our sport. It's my money that I'm putting in. I need to have a greater say on how the sport is run."

Last year's Rugby League World Cup was deemed a glowing success and Koukash sees no reason why Super League cannot follow in the footsteps of the tournament and enjoy greater exposure and revenue.

The National Rugby League (NRL) Down Under is as popular as ever with lucrative sponsorship deals meaning their salary cap is vastly superior to Super League.

Koukash is investing his own money into Salford to help the team grow and expand and he sees no reason why owners cannot be given a greater say on the direction and future of the game.

Things not working

"Obviously things are not working now, because had they been working you wouldn't have 12 teams out of the 14 in financial difficulty," he told Sky Sports.

"So there's not enough money coming in, we don't have a major sponsor and the sport needs to be promoted better.

"Super League needs to have a greater control of its own destiny. It's our sport. It's my money that I'm putting in. I need to have a greater say on how the sport is run.

"We have the talent here, but we need to make the sport more popular in order to attract more people to the game. Not just to watch, but to play as well.

"When you look at the NRL they have a salary cap that's about three or four times more than us. So they will always have the best talent."
