Lee Radford is in line to replace Peter Gentle as Hull FC head coach, with the club set to follow the recent trend by appointing an all-English coaching team.

The 47-year-old Gentle, recruited from Wests Tigers two years ago to succeed Richard Agar, parted company with the club on Tuesday, just five days after the humiliating 76-18 Super League play-off defeat at Huddersfield.

Hull are set to appoint a successor in the next 24 hours with Gentle's assistant Radford widely expected to get the job and, at 34, become the youngest head coach in Super League.

He will also become the ninth English head coach in the 14-team Super League, with only Hull KR, London Broncos, St Helens and Warrington having Australians in charge.

French club Catalan Dragons also have a "home-grown" coach in Laurent Frayssinous and Pearson will have taken note that of the four clubs involved in this week's play-off semi-finals, three are coached by Englishmen.

It is a far cry from 2000 when the sacking of John Kear at Huddersfield, which paved the way for the appointment of Australian Tony Smith, meant that every club in Super League had an overseas coach in charge.

Radford, who joined his hometown club in 1997 and returned for a second spell in 2006 after a successful eight-year stint at Bradford, hung up his boots two years ago to take up a three-year contract as assistant coach, although he was twice agreed to come out of retirement to answer the club's injury crisis.

Long-serving academy coach Andy Last looks likely to be promoted to become Radford's assistant and another former player, Paul Cooke, the newly-appointed head coach of Doncaster, is also expected to play a role in the re-organisation, with Hull set to announce a partnership with the Championship club.
