St Helens head coach Nathan Brown has confirmed he wants veteran Paul Wellens to play on for at least another season.
The 33-year-old, who made his 450th appearance for the club in Friday's demolition job of the Salford City Reds, is out of contact at the end of the season.
Wellens has played the vast majority of his lengthy career at full-back, although former Huddersfield boss Brown has moved him to scrum-half.
The Australian has been pleased with Wellens' adaptability and does not want to lose his leadership skills ahead of the 2014 Super League campaign.
"He plays on great commitment and effort for the team and good awareness. He is adapting to his new role in the team well," he said in the St Helens Star.
"Ideally I'd like Wello to play on for another year. He provides a lot for us with his leadership.
"We will be losing numbers of experienced players. The people we bring in won't be older players so we'd definitely like him to stay around."
