Castleford Tigers have appointed Daryl Powell as their new Head Coach after agreeing a deal for his release from Featherstone Rovers.

New Castleford coach Daryl Powell believes he can help the Tigers claw their way into Super League's top eight.

The 47-year-old has left Featherstone Rovers to take over at the Wish Communications Stadium; Australian Ian Millward left last month after a run of seven straight defeats.

"You need your special players to come up with special things at times, and Castleford have certainly got those players right across the park."

Cas caretaker boss Danny Orr was in charge for Sunday's home victory over Hull KR, their third triumph of the campaign moving them off the foot of the table.

However Powell is looking up rather than down, with the former Great Britain international using Wakefield's late run into the play-offs last season as an example of what can be achieved in the second half of a season.

"You look at what Wakefield achieved last year, and I'm not saying anybody can win seven games on the spin, but confidence is an unbelievable thing," he told Sky Sports.

"If a team is playing with confidence, if they have belief in each other and know what they're doing, then there's no reason why special things can't be achieved. The talent is all there.

"You need your special players to come up with special things at times, and Castleford have certainly got those players right across the park.

"I believe they've got all the components that a special rugby league team should have. I don't see any reason why the team can't win games consistently."

Cup success

Powell, who previously coached in the top flight with Leeds Rhinos, got a chance to see Castleford close up last season - his Featherstone side knocked their local rivals out of the Challenge Cup.

"I've been coaching a part-time team for the last four years," he added.

"Our (Feathertone's) last four games against Super League opposition had seen us beat Castleford and nearly beat them in a pre-season friendly, then we were very close to beating London the other week, when we were 4-0 up at half-time, and then we did great against Wigan.

"I feel as if I have proved myself for a fair while from a coaching perspective in different scenarios, at Leeds, at Featherstone and in rugby union as well.

"I think if you speak to the players I've worked with they have had an enjoyable experience. The key is to helping them get better - I hope I can do that here."

Powell's first game in charge sees Castleford travel to Perpignan to take on Catalans Dragons on Saturday.
