St Helens half-back Gary Wheeler has been ruled out for four months with a ruptured hamstring tendon.

The luckless 23-year-old suffered the latest in a long line of injuries in Friday's 20-12 home defeat by Leeds, which was only his second appearance of the season.

Saints coach Nathan Brown said: "It is unfortunate for Gary and his family because he has had a bit of a run of this over a number of years."

Saints, who have only won two of their five games this season, are struggling with injuries.

Captain Paul Wellens is trying to recover from a calf problem which has kept him out of the last two games, while Lance Hohaia and Josh Perry are also on the sidelines.
