Wakefield centre Lee Smith will miss the start of the new Super League season after suffering a nasty injury in training.
The former Leeds Rhinos favourite and England international is facing a four-week lay-off after badly dislocating his thumb in training on Wednesday.
"It's terrible news for Lee," said Wildcats coach Richard Agar. "It was a bad injury late on in training.
"He's had an open dislocation on his thumb where the bone has come through his skin. Fortunately there is no break and they put the thumb back.
"We're hoping it will be around a four-week injury. It's a real blow for Lee."
It is the second training ground injury to affect the Wildcats during the off-season with Kyle Wood having been forced to undergo surgery on a detached retina.
Wakefield will also be without forward Andy Raleigh for Sunday's friendly against Doncaster but captain Danny Kirmond, Dean Collis, Kyle Amor, Vince Mellars and Oliver Wilkes all return.
