Wigan Warriors full-back Sam Tomkins is desperate to turn 2012's nearly men into a silverware-winning team.

Although Shaun Wane's men clinched the League Leaders' Shield they missed out on a Grand Final appearance, while they were also eliminated at the semi-final stage of the Challenge Cup.

Wigan is a club with a proud tradition of bringing home silverware and England international Tomkins insists the team will not repeat the mistakes of last year.

"We were disappointed with how we finished last season," the 2012 Man of Steel winner told Sky Sports.

"We don't see ourselves as a semi-finals team. We've probably undersold ourselves a little bit.

"We're a team that want to get to finals and want to win stuff, so this year we'll be looking to change that."

"We were the most consistent team which we we're very proud of, but that doesn't get you the Grand Final or the Challenge Cup at the end of the day.

"You've got to be better in the big games. We weren't, but this year we'll be looking to change that."

When asked what the team have learned from last season, Tomkins added: "Don't lose in semi-finals.

"We've learned a lot. We've matured as a team. It was that last hurdle we fell and we won't do it again, hopefully."

Wigan are renowned for their ability to produce young talent and Tomkins is tipping Welsh youngster Rhodri Lloyd to enjoy a breakthrough season in 2013.

The teenager made his Wales debut against Italy aged 17 and Tomkins feels his team-mate will mature and develop into a quality player.

"He's a young Welsh kid. He plays a bit of back row and centre," he said. "He's still maturing. He's still pretty slight. Once he starts putting a bit of weight on he'll be a really good player."
