Richard Ager: Hoping to have a new signing in play by January 5
Wakefield head coach Richard Agar is close to strengthening his team after missing out on a move for Leeds Rhinos prop Ian Kirke.
The Wildcats were given permission to hold talks with the 31-year-old, but he opted to see out the remaining year of his Headingley deal.
"We had to set our sights elsewhere and we're now down the line in talks with another guy."
However, that has not deterred Agar in his chase for fresh talent and hopes to get his man before they fly to Portugal for pre-season camp on January 5.
"We held talks with Ian Kirke, his representatives and Leeds but after speaking with them it was obvious that he wanted to stay there for the time being," Agar told the Wakefield Express.
"We had to set our sights elsewhere and we're now down the line in talks with another guy. I'm pretty certain we will have him here before we go to Portugal.
"I'm happy with the squad as it stands but another signing will add strength in depth and some more competition for places. I'm pleased overall at how things have gone."
