Australia have re-appointed Tim Sheens as coach until after next year's World Cup.

The former Wests Tigers chief has been re-signed for a fifth term and will also help with the national high performance programme.

During his time as national coach, the Kangaroos have played in 18 matches with only one loss - in the 2010 final of the Four Nations in Brisbane.

But reclaiming the World Cup trophy Ricky Stuart lost to New Zealand in 2008 is his priority.

"The Kangaroos have a proud history in the World Cup, winning nine of the 13 tournaments ever contested, so bringing the 2013 trophy home from the UK is my key focus," Sheens said.

"However, I am also very excited about the opportunity to have input into the national high performance programme and the pathways for our future Kangaroos."

NRL general manager of league integration and game development Andrew Hill hopes the extra role will help promote the Kangaroos globally .

"The new structure is part of the ARL commission's commitment to growing international football and the brand of the Australian Kangaroos," he said.

"In the past the Australian coach did the same as the players and just turned up in camp. Now he will be able to help increase the profile of the Kangaroos, which is important in a World Cup year.

"While the position is not full-time, Tim will also play a greater role in helping develop pathways for our Junior Kangaroos, Australian Schoolboys and emerging Origin teams."
