The Wigan full-back missed his club side's Super League play-off semi-final defeat to eventual champions Leeds with the problem.
He has already stated his desire to represent his country in the clashes against Wales and France on October 27 and November 3 respectively, but still needs to assess his injury at an upcoming training camp.
"It's not too bad, it's getting a little bit better. It was touch and go whether I'd be right for the Leeds game, unfortunately it wasn't to be," Tomkins told Sky Sports News.
"I'm off to South Africa on Wednesday with the England team, we've got 10 days training there to decide whether it will be right for the England game. Hopefully it will."
Tomkins was recently named as the 2012 Man of Steel and the 23-year-old has revealed his pride at being voted the best player in Super League by his peers.
He added: "It was a little bit overwhelming on the night - I was honoured to get nominated in the top three again. To win it was pretty special."
