Saints full-back set to sign new one-year contract

St Helens captain Paul Wellens is close to signing a new 12-month deal with his home-town club. The 32-year-old former Great Britain full-back, who has scored 205 tries in 427 appearances since making his debut for Saints in 1998, is out of contract at the end of the season and in no rush to hang up his boots. "I think something will be announced pretty soon," commented Wellens. "We're close to agreeing another one-year extension."

Sensible

Wellens, who is expected to keep the captaincy when Nathan Brown takes over as head coach in November, is happy to take it one season at time. "A year is a sensible option, not just for the club but for myself as well," he continued. "Form, fitness and injuries will all dictate how long I play. "I'm pleased with the way I'm going and I'm loving captaining the club."
