Wigan act to secure centre's future

Wigan Warriors have handed George Carmont an improved contract to fend off potential suitors. The Auckland-born centre, 30, was an ever present during his first season at the JJB Stadium, scoring 14 tries in 33 appearances. His previous deal had an option for 2009 but Wigan's decision to offer "amended" terms quashes speculation linking him with French rugby union clubs. "George Carmont did an excellent job for Wigan in 2008 and enjoys both the club and the town," said Wigan chairman Ian Lenagan. "Whilst we already held an automatic contract extension into 2009 with George, it was only fair to reflect better George's value to the club and at the same time to secure an option for 2010." Carmont joined Wigan from Newcastle Knights last winter and his impressive performances earned him Wigan's players' player of the year award and a place in the engage Super League Dream Team.
