Hull to let Briscoe go

Hull have announced that full-back Shaun Briscoe will not be offered a new contract due to salary cap constraints.

Briscoe set to leave KC Stadium at the end of the season.

Hull have announced that full-back Shaun Briscoe will not be offered a new contract due to salary cap constraints. Briscoe has recently lost his full-back slot to versatile New Zealand star Motu Tony and coach Peter Sharp says the club cannot afford two top stars on the books in the same position. With Briscoe's contract expiring at the end of the season, he could well follow Paul Cooke in joining city rivals Hull KR at the end of the campaign. Hull chief executive James Rule explained that although it was a tough decision he and coach Sharp feels it is the best one for the club's future. "It has been a very tough decision to make but we have decided not to re-sign Shaun for next year," said Rule. "Salary-cap pressures dictate that it is not economically viable to retain two full-backs on a level of contracts that Shaun and Motu command."

Coach's decision

"As a board, we back Peter 100% and we attempt to facilitate all his requests. He, like all head coaches, is tasked with assembling his squad, the performance of which he will be directly accountable for," Rule continued. "Sport can be a brutal business and unfortunately at times difficult decisions have to be taken for the good of the club. "However, our ultimate goal is to take Hull FC forward and develop the club and to facilitate that some difficult decisions have to be made." It is the second time 24-year-old Briscoe has become a victim of the salary cap, after home town club Wigan released him earlier in his career. Briscoe moved directly to Hull in 2003 and scored 57 tries in 100 appearances for the Black and Whites but this season will be his last at the KC Stadium.
