The top seed Janko Tipsarevic has been sent packing from the ATP World Tour event in Dusseldorf, losing in straight sets to Guido Pella of Argentina.

The world No 10 was beaten 7-6 (7-1) 6-1 in 89 minutes having struggled with his first serve throughout the match in the Power Horse Cup.

Pella, who missed a set point in the 11th game of the opener, made no mistake in the tie-break where he conceded just the fourth point.

In a one-sided second set, the world No 101 from Buenos Aires clinched a well-deserved victory by reeling off six straight games.

The defeated Serb could win just eight of the final 32 points, as Pella booked his quarter-final spot, where he will face seventh-seed Viktor Troicki, a 6-3 7-6 (7/3) victor over Grega Zemlja.

'Old bones'

Tommy Haas will face the man who knocked him out of the Australian Open, Jarkko Nieminen, after he beat Ivan Dodig 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 in two hours.

"It was a tough battle," said Haas on the ATP World Tour's website. "I was close to losing, down 4-5, 15-30 in the third set. Ivan played a terrific match. It was tough conditions, with rain in between.

"It wasn't the best for my old bones. Jarkko is a very experienced player and it will be good to get revenge tomorrow."

Nieminen overcame Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 in two hours and 33 minutes. while third seeded wild card Juan Monaco beat b 30-year-old Andre Ghem 6-4, 6-4 to reach his third quarter-final of the year.

Ghem won his first tour-level match in February 2006 at Costa do Sauipe (d. Kuerten). "It is always nice to play at a place where you have good memories," said Monaco.

"I played really well today. I knew from the beginning that the weather was not great. I now play Tobias Kamke, a good player who will have the support of the crowd."
