Hull Kingston Rovers have bolstered their depleted forward pack with the addition of Wigan prop James Greenwood on loan until the end of the season.

Greenwood, 23, has already linked up with the Robins and went straight into head coach Chris Chester’s 19-man squad to face Leeds at Headingley on Friday night.

The Rovers boss has moved quickly to bring in reinforcements after losing forwards Dane Tilse, Adam Walker and Graeme Horne to injury this week, and Chester said he was expecting the six-foot, two-inch, 17-stone Greenwood to add valuable pace and power to his pack.

Chester said: “James has come through a very good system at Wigan and he’s highly rated within the club and the game. He’s a tough young kid who will bring a real physical presence out on the field and I’m sure he’ll make a big difference for us for the rest of the season.

“We’re delighted to have him on board and I can’t thank Wigan enough for allowing us to borrow his services.”

Greenwood, a product of Wigan’s academy having started his career at home-town club Oldham, has already made a handful of first-team appearances for the Warriors and spent last season on loan at London Broncos, where he scored three tries in 16 matches.

The former Saddleworth Rangers amateur also enjoyed a month’s loan at Super League rivals Salford Red Devils earlier this season.

Hull KR chief executive Mike Smith said: “I’d like to take this opportunity to personally thank the Wigan coaching staff and directors for their support in allowing us to bring James on loan to the club for the rest of the season.

“I’m sure it will be a deal that benefits all parties and once again it goes to show the fantastic relationship we have with the Warriors and long may that continue.”
