Hull KR captain Terry Campese has given the club a boast after signing a new deal before the derby on Thursday evening.

The Australian half back has only represented his new club seven times since leaving the Canberra Raiders in the winter, but his presence on the field has been so significant that head coach Chris Chester was keen to keep him at the KC Lightstream Stadium for the long term.

The former NSW representative has put pen to paper up to 2017 with the option of a further year. Speaking to the club website Campese has expressed his delight in signing the new deal and is happy with his side’s current form.

"We're only seven games into the season but I think we've shown some good signs that we can do something this year," said Campese, who put in a man-of-the-match display in his side's 24-22 win over St Helens on Friday.

"This club is definitely going places and I'm glad to be a part of it."

The Australian is a nephew of the famous rugby union player David Campese who has already watched him in action this season in the defeat of Wigan.

"I've really enjoyed my time here since arriving in the new year," Campese added.

"The coaching staff have been excellent, the boys are a tight-knit group and I couldn't ask for it to have run any smoother to be honest.

"That made it an easy decision in that I know what I've got here at Hull KR, how good the club is and how mad the fans are.

"Everybody is so passionate around the place and the city of Hull has been good to me as well. It reminds me of where I'm from back in Australia and I'm excited to stay here longer."

The arrival of Campese has counteracted the losses suffered by the Robins which included their major talisman Travis Burns moving to St Helens and hooker Josh Hodgson going to the NRL to play at Campese’s previous club the Raiders.

The experienced half back has captained his former club the Raiders for three seasons as well as having over 100 appearances in the NRL. He was also awarded the captaincy by Chester only months after arriving in East Yorkshire. He has rewarded his coach by putting in a number of man-of-the-match performances.

"He's the leader of the group and a player that the other blokes look up to," Chester said.

"He's been instrumental in creating the culture that we currently have in the squad and he will have a huge role to play for us over the next few years."
