Catalans Dragons stand-off Todd Carney has won a case for unfair dismissal by his former club Cronulla.

The 2010 international player of the year was sacked by the Sharks last June following the posting of a lewd photograph on social media.

Carney, 28, who joined the French Super League club on a three-year contract in the winter, took his case to the NRL appeals committee, whose chairman Ian Callinan QC has ruled Cronulla failed to give the player an opportunity to defend himself before tearing up his contract.

The outcome potentially provides Carney with a way back to the NRL and the option of taking a legal claim for unfair dismissal to an industrial relations commission.

Carney, who was also sacked by previous club Canberra and left Sydney Roosters before the end of his contract, is currently sidelined with a broken rib.
