Super League: Keiron Cunningham relishing challenge of retaining Super League trophy

Keiron Cunningham says he will relish the challenge of attempting to successfully defend St Helens' Super League trophy in his first season in charge.

Saints' former captain and long-serving hooker succeeded Australian Nathan Brown, who stepped down as head coach to return home for family reasons after steering the club to Grand Final glory at Old Trafford in November.

"I'm here to do my job and win trophies, it's that simple," Cunningham said. "I enjoy pressure and the job and I want to win."

St Helens play their first pre-season friendly against Widnes at Langtree Park on Sunday as they prepare for their opening league fixture against Catalans Dragons on Friday, February 6.

Cunningham confirmed that Australian scrum-half Luke Walsh is on course to make his comeback in that match after being sidelined since last July with a broken leg.

"Luke Walsh should be ready for the first game of the season and he's looking good," Cunningham said.
