Hull KR shook off their loss to Wigan with a 54-6 Super League destruction of Wakefield on Thursday night.
Tries from Kris Welham, Albert Kelly, Graeme Horne, Ken Sio, John Boudebza, Tyrone McCarthy and two each for Josh Mantellato and Kieran Dixon - to go with 14 points from the boot of Mantellato - made for a great comeback from Chris Chester’s men in front of their home fans.
Man of the Match Mantellato was heavily involved in all aspects of play, with 22 points in total coming from tries as well as kicks. Albert Kelly and Terry Campese both kicked brilliantly out of hand to keep the scoreboard ticking for the home team.
The game started off with strong defence from Wakefield but with Hull KR getting the ball wide in quick succession with each possession, it was only a matter of time before they conceded.
Returning captain Campese put a high kick up which was claimed by Josh Mantellato in the air. The ball was switched to the left where Kris Welham was waiting in space for an easy opening score.
There was danger of another big scoreline when winger Mantellato went over shortly thereafter, but a deft step from Wakefield’s Joe Arundel brought his side back into the match with a try for the visitors.
The belief was short-lived, though, as Ben Cockayne broke up the middle before offloading to a supporting Albert Kelly for the third try, and Campese then drew the entire defence before floating a pass to Mantellato who ran in his second try of the game to make it 20-6 to the home side at half-time.
Again both sides defended well in the opening stages of the half, but again it was Wakefield who could not hold out as long as their hosts. Kelly dabbed another kick ahead which was collected by Graeme Horne who only had one defender to beat for the first score of the second half.
The game ended as a contest when Campese put up another clever high kick which Wakefield failed to recover, only managing to scramble the ball towards their line where Dixon was waiting for the easiest try of his career. Dixon did not manage to convert his own try but at 30-6 his side had done enough.
Dixon went over shortly thereafter again, and Sio added to the woes of the visitors with a 69th minute effort. He then set up Boudebza to make it 48-6 before McCarthy crossed for the final try of the game.
