Tetley's Challenge Cup: Widnes Vikings hit back to see off Halifax
Last Updated: 06/04/14 6:15pm
Widnes turned around a 10-6 half-time deficit to run out comfortable 34-10 winners over Halifax in the fourth round of the Tetley's Challenge Cup.
A shock seemed on the cards when the Championship side found themselves in front at the break thanks to tries from Ryan Fieldhouse and Gareth Potts.
However the Vikings were in no mood to see their dreams of reaching Wembley come to an early end, responding by running in five tries without reply after the interval.
Danny Tickle also kicked five goals as Denis Betts' troops booked a tie against fellow Super League club Salford Red Devils in the next round.
They had fallen behind in the ninth minute, Fieldhouse cashing in after a towering bomb had been missed by two Widnes players. Centre Steve Tyrer successfully added the conversion.
Putting boot to ball paid off again for Halifax when Scott Murrell's chip over the top set up Potts, who won the race with Declan Hulme.
Widnes' only try in the first 40 minutes came from captain Jon Clarke, with Tickle's successful kick making it a four-point gap at the break, as they struggled to turn pressure into points.
They didn't have the same problem after the break, though. Lloyd White's short pass put Kevin Brown through a gap after 49 minutes, and from then on the Vikings didn't look back.
Brown turned from scorer to provider in setting up both Paddy Flynn and Hulme, making it 22-10 with an hour gone.
Forward Phil Joseph's try after 70 minutes finally put the tie out of the home side's reach, and Brown rounded out the scoring by intercepting a loose pass and galloping 80 metres to the line.
