Super League: Hull rally from 16-6 deficit to defeat Warrington Wolves
Last Updated: 18/05/13 8:16am
Tom Briscoe and Richard Whiting both crossed twice as Hull hit back from a 10-point deficit to defeat Warrington 26-16 at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
The Black and Whites looked set to suffer a ninth defeat in their last 10 trips to the home of the Wolves when Ryan Atkins' try early in the second half made it 16-6 to the hosts.
However, the visitors - who were thankfully not held up by the traffic chaos on the M62 like so many of their supporters - produced a storming fightback, scoring 20 points without reply to record their most impressive win of the season so far.
The result lifts Peter Gentle's side into fifth place as they handed Warrington just their second loss in front of their own fans in 2013.
The Wire could at least take a crumb of comfort in seeing Lee Briers making his first Super League appearance since February, and it was his grubber kick, seized upon by Simon Grix, that finally saw the deadlock broken just before the half-hour mark.
Briers' half-back partner Richie Myler showed how he too can be dangerous when he puts boot to ball, a well-weighted chip to the right seeing Joel Monaghan catch and finish, despite the presence of two Hull players.
Yet Hull - who had already seen a score for winger Tom Lineham chalked off due to a push by Whiting on Atkins - hit back before the break.
Aaron Heremaia made the most of a free play to set up Briscoe's first of the night, the winger not having to break stride to claim the hooker's kick before finishing next to the uprights to leave Daniel Holdsworth an easy conversion.
Myler's kick set up Atkins to leap above Lineham and score the first points of the second half and restore a double-digit gap, though the Hull winger made amends at the other end soon after with a fine finish out on the right.
From then on the Airlie Birds simply soared clear; Richard Horne's brilliantly-timed pass allowed Jason Crookes to set up Whiting for a converted score that levelled it up at 16 apiece.
The forward's second try of the night edged Hull into the lead with nine minutes remaining, another superb ball from Horne allowing his team-mate to force his way over from close range.
Holdsworth added the extras and the result was wrapped up in the closing stages when Briscoe won the race to his own chip over the top down the left wing, completing his brace and rounding out a superb display from his team.
