Super League: Hull KR pushed all the way by Castleford Tigers
Last Updated: 25/03/13 7:41am
Hull KR made it three straight Super League home wins following a hard-fought 26-22 success over the Castleford Tigers at New Craven Park.
Craig Sandercock's men dominated for large periods and while Castleford twice fought back and threatened to claim the points in East Yorkshire their comeback fell just short.
Rovers were quicker out of the blocks and opened the scoring when Travis Burns' grubber kick was blocked by Rangi Chase, he re-gathered to score from close range. The youngster then added the extras.
The home side moved 10 points clear when Kris Welham pounced on Michael Dobson's angled kick. This time Burns was unable to convert.
The Tigers got on the scoreboard when David Hodgson made a meal of Jordan Tansey's kick which allowed Kirk Dixon to score the easiest of tries. Four became six when Dixon slotted home from the touchline.
Hodgson atoned for his earlier mistake by scoring Hull KR's third try of the night. Four straight penalties hampered Castleford and the winger was on the end of a flowing move involving Dobson, Greg Eden and Welham.
Castleford finished the half in the ascendancy with tries from Jake Webster, against his former club, and Richard Owen giving Ian Millward's troops a two-point half-time advantage.
Hull KR began the second half like the first with the opening two scores. Josh Hodgson showed great strength to muscle his way over from close range before Craig Hall latched onto Burns' well-placed grubber kick. Burns converted both tries for their second ten-point lead of the game.
Castleford fought back once again and again their try came from an Eden mistake. The full-back allowed Tansey's bomb to bounce and it was a favourable bounce for the visitors with Daryl Clark pouncing to score. Dixon's extras cut Rovers' lead to four points.
Millward's men suffered a blow when influential centre Webster, who was having a strong game on the left, was forced from the field of play after injuring his elbow making a tackle.
Hull KR missed the chance to pad out their advantage in the closing stages when Burns failed to convert a penalty following Weller Hauraki's shoulder charge on the fifth tackle, although it it did not matter as there was no further scoring.
