Super League: Castleford thump Wakefield at the Ethiad Stadium
Last Updated: 26/05/13 10:58am
Winger Kirk Dixon scored four tries to help Castleford see off Wakefield 49-24 in the second game of Magic Weekend.
Daryl Powell also celebrated his first win as Tigers coach in a 13-try feast against their derby rivals at the Ethiad Stadium in Manchester.
Although Dixon took the plaudits, Rangi Chase created five of their nine tries in the sun to impress and help his side move away from the foot of the table.
Wakefield, who won 37-16 win at the home of their near neighbours back in March, were desperately disappointing as they lost further ground in their pursuit of a play-off spot.
It was largely one-way traffic from the fourth minute when hooker Daryl Clark squeezed over from dummy half after forward Grant Millington had been brought down just short of the line.
Jamie Ellis kicked the first of his six goals and they were quickly in again with a spectacular 90-metre try. Indeed, the Tigers were scoring at a point a minute when Dixon touched down Chase's kick to the line for his first of the day.
The Wildcats struggled to get out of their own half and they fell further behind on 25 minutes when prop Craig Huby regathered Chase's high kick to register a fourth score.
Ellis' third goal made it 22-0 but the slow-starting Wildcats struck with two tries in five minutes to briefly haul themselves into the game.
Samoan international Taulima Tautai marked his debut by setting up Dean Collis for his eighth try of the season, and captain Danny Kirmond then took Lee Smith's pass to slice through for another.
But Castleford then pulled further clear with two more tries in the last five minutes of the first half through Dixon and blockbusting winger Justin Carney.
At 32-12, there was no way back for Wakefield, although centre Collis scored his second try after collecting Tim Smith's pinpoint kick to the corner.
Dixon collected Chase's long pass to complete his hat-trick on 50 minutes and, after Thompson had barged over for a solo score, finished off a sweeping move to add his fourth try of the match.
Wakefield replacement Chris Annakin grabbed a consolation effort and Smith kicked his fourth goal, but Ellis had the final say when he put over a drop goal to round out the scoring.
