Super League: Wigan Warriors beaten at home by Castleford Tigers
Last Updated: 28/06/13 11:30pm
Andy Powell suffered a losing start to his rugby league career as Super League leaders Wigan were beaten 18-4 at home by Castleford Tigers.
Kirk Dixon scored a try and kicked three goals while Grant Millington and James Clare also touched down, as the visitors caused a major upset at the DW Stadium.
All the wounded Warriors could manage in reply was an unconverted score from Josh Charnley; the loss, coupled with Huddersfield's triumph over Catalan Dragons, means Shaun Wane's side now sit just a point clear at the summit.
Powell's first appearance since switching codes was a rare plus point on an otherwise tough night for Wigan, who were without Sam Tomkins and Lee Mossop following their gruelling defeat to Warrington on Monday night.
The rugby union convert - only added to the squad after Tom Spencer and Logan Tomkins failed fitness tests on Friday afternoon - was introduced from the bench after 28 minutes and didn't take too long to get involved.
However by that stage the Tigers had already broken the deadlock through Dixon after Lewis Tierney, filling in for Tomkins at full-back, had knocked on a Rangi Chase kick that he had initially done so well to deal with.
Only a last-gasp tackle from Liam Farrell stopped the ever-dangerous Chase going over before a Dixon penalty opened up an 8-0 lead.
From the re-start they then scored a second try, Richard Owen bursting down the right before sending Jordan Tansey clear. He in turn offloaded to Millington to touch down despite the best efforts of Tierney.
Wigan did improve at the start of the second half but shot themselves in the foot by giving away penalties.
Chase took full advantage of one such opportunity, sending out a sublime ball to Dixon who then put Clare in at the corner to celebrate signing a new two-year contract with a try.
It took the Warriors until just before the hour mark to finally get on the scoreboard, a quickly-taken tap penalty allowing centre Darrell Goulding to set up winger Charnley with a neat offload out the back of his hand.
They pushed hard to try and add to their tally but found the Tigers in no mood to give up the fight. The visitors even managed to have the last word too, a penalty right on the full-time hooter being slotted over by Dixon.
