Super League: Huddersfield Giants beat Leeds Rhinos for a third time this season
Last Updated: 23/06/13 5:59pm
Shaun Lunt scored twice against his former club as the Huddersfield Giants maintained their fine form against the Leeds Rhinos with a 40-18 success at the John Smith's Stadium.
Paul Anderson's men have now beaten the champions three times this season having already won at Headingley and then also eliminated Brian McDermott's men in the fifth round Challenge Cup.
Liam Sutcliffe's second try of the match brought Leeds back to within ten points, but Lunt's second and an effort from Scott Grix clinched an emphatic win for the home side.
The visitors enjoyed all the early pressure, forcing two goal-line drop-outs to test out the Giants defence, but Huddersfield opened the scoring from their first meaningful attack.
Danny Brough's long pass enabled England centre Leroy Cudjoe to get into his stride and his inside pass put scrum-half Luke Robinson in the clear.
Brough kicked the first of his six goals but the Rhinos drew level when Sutcliffe jinked his way over for a solo score that Zak Hardaker converted.
The Giants were full of invention, though, and they hit the champions with two tries in three minutes to establish control.
Lunt forced his way over from dummy-half before winger Aaron Murphy supported Joe Wardle's break to touch down.
Leeds centre Jimmy Keinhorst helped keep his side in the game when his one-handed pass got winger Ben Jones-Bishop over but Huddersfield reclaimed a 10-point lead when Brough got second rower Brett Ferres racing through a gap for a fourth home try three minutes before the break.
Stalemate set in during the third quarter but a superb kick from Brough set up the position for the ever-dangerous Lunt to get Cudjoe over on the hour.
Huddersfield were reduced to 12 men on 67 minutes when full-back Scott Grix was sin-binned for a professional foul, moments after fumbling Hardaker's towering kick, and they were relieved when Jones-Bishop had a try disallowed for a forward pass.
The Rhinos were given renewed hope when second rower Mitch Achurch exploded into a gap in the home defence to enable Burrow to assist Sutcliffe, Hardaker knocking over his third conversion.
However, the Giants ended the match on top when Brough's jinking run got Lunt clear and then Grix emerged from the sin-bin to finish off Larne Patrick's break with his team's seventh and final try of the afternoon.
