Super League: Leaders Wigan run riot with a crushing win over Hull KR
Last Updated: 01/04/13 5:36pm
Blake Green scored a hat-trick against his former club as Wigan stayed top of the Super League table by scoring 15 tries in an emphatic 84-6 victory over Hull KR at New Craven Park.
The visitors were in cruise control with 15 minutes played thanks to tries from Josh Charnley, Green, Pat Richards and Ian Thornley.
Jack Hughes kept the scoreboard ticking over before Green added his second of the match, although Greg Eden did pull one back before half time.
Normal service was resumed after the interval when Green scored his third. Matty Smith and Chris Tuson both scored twice, Sam Powell and Liam Farrell crossed, Hughes added a second while Sam Tomkins also got his name on the scoresheet. Richards converted 12 of Wigan's 15 tries.
Charnley, who made his Super League debut for Hull KR back in 2010, opened the scoring after Kris Welham jumped out of the defensive line to leave open space for the flying winger to attack. Alex Brown did his best to stop Charnley - who got injured in the process and was immediately replaced by Jack Hughes.
Green marked his return to the club he left in September by scoring Wigan's second try after good work by Tomkins. Tomkins' speed allowed him to set up another try-scoring opportunity for Iain Thornley to convert as Rovers struggled to stop the marauding Warriors.
Richards was next to score as he was quickest to his own kick to score ahead of a couple of beleaguered Rovers defenders who were finding the going tough against ruthless Wigan.
Hughes added his name to the scoresheet after getting the better of debutant Matty Beharrell and then Greg Eden.
Green grabbed his second on the half hour mark as the game was taken away from Rovers. Richards had a mixed half kicking goals with a return of three from six. It hardly mattered.
Just as it looked as though Rovers would be held scoreless, Craig Hall dabbed through for Eden to score to spare Rovers' blushes. Even though it was the final seconds of the first half, it was merely a consolation score as Wigan led 36-6 at the break.
It did not take long for things to get much worse for Rovers with Hall failing to find touch from a rare home penalty in the 42nd minute. From it, Wigan forced a goal-line drop out before Green completed his hat-trick with ease from a Powell pass.
Everything Wigan did, came off. Matty Smith's superb 40/20 left Rovers facing another assault on their line by a now rampant Wigan side.
It was fitting for Smith to turn his kick into a try, which Richards converted for a 42-6 lead. It was now a case of how many points Wigan would score in the final half hour.
Chris Tuson was not going to pass up his chance of glory and went over thanks to another Tomkins assist. Richards made it 48-6 before he was called on conversion duties three minutes later after Smith added his second to compound Rovers' misery further.
Wigan still were not done. On their next set Powell scored and on their next set after that Farrell went over with Richards converting both after creating both with clever infield kicks.
Rovers were having a nightmare trailing 6-66, but the scoring was not finished. Thornley and Tuson added their second tries of a very one-sided encounter before Tomkins rounded off the scoring.
