Verdict

An exciting race with which to begin the Open meeting, with smart hurdler DYNASTE making a most accomplished start to his career as a steeplechaser. He jumped well, travelled sweetly behind a fairly steady early pace, quickened up when asked to stretch on the run to the final fence and pulled clear on the run to the winning post. Given that his stamina for longer trips was proven over hurdles, it was hard not to take a great deal of encouragement for his long-term prospects from this performance. Fingal Bay tried to take on Unioniste heading to the fourth-last fence, but was outjumped. However, he came back on the bridle and had just about got to the front over the second last only for the winner to come swinging past. His jumping was largely satisfactory and he showed a better turn of foot than those who finished behind him. But it's hard to immediately see how he will reverse placings with the winner in the future. Unioniste jumped with enthusiasm in front and it was interesting to see him staying on again in the closing stages having been outspeeded two out. With hindsight, he could actually have benefited from setting a slightly quicker pace, however this was clearly performance of merit. He was getting weight from Fingal Bay though and may not be that easy to place with two chase wins already in the book.
