The field finished well strung out on the testing ground which necessitated a flag start with racecourse staff unable to manoeuvre the stalls. The result was a famous one-two for Donald McCain with ILE DE RE getting the better of last year's winner Overturn who deserves huge credit for a terrific performance. Although, connections can't impair their own chances by altering tactics it still seems remarkable that Eddie Ahern was allowed such an easy time of things out in front on Overturn having successfully employed similar tactics 12 months ago and in the Northumberland Plate in 2010. He was racing from a 7lb higher mark but it's more than likely that it was the ground that beat him rather than the handicapper as he's far more effective on a significantly faster surface although he may have gone for home a fraction early when challenged by Never Can Tell. Despite the give underfoot, he was only reeled in late on by Ile De Re who was having his first start for the stable since leaving Ian Williams, further improving the recent record of 'hurdlers' in this contest. The French import had shown decent form on the level for his previous yard, winning at the Shergar Cup and finishing a close fourth in a Listed handicap at this track last August, but took his form to a new level on ground that he relished. The handicapper will have his say but the Northumberland Plate is an obvious option while he will be a fascinating prospect for the next National Hunt season racing from a mark that's not a million miles ahead of his Flat rating. Overturn, meanwhile, could head to Royal Ascot for either the Gold Cup or the Queen Alexandra. They finished clear of the progressive Gulf Of Naples whose jockey did well to take-up a prominent early position from his wide draw. Ultimately, he was no match for the first pair but was having just the eighth start of his career and is just the type of horse that his trainer excels with. He was followed home by stablemate Eternal Heart who forfeited a good draw with a tardy start which connections felt cost him the race. He's a versatile sort with his sole win last season coming over 12 furlongs but it would be no surprise to see him campaigned in the Cup races. Harrison's Cave's performance can be upgraded as he raced at the rear of a strung-out field for much of the contest; he made ground easily with about six furlongs to run before running out of steam and plugging on at the one pace. He has no big race entries but looks capable of playing a leading role in a similar contest on this evidence. Kiama Bay left a poor reappearance behind to run a fair race but may be held by the assessor but Dazinski is slipping back down to a winnable mark and can pick up a less competitive affair granted better ground. Tominator improved markedly for being stepped up in trip last season and, with form at this track to his name (finished in front of the winner) and on soft ground, his effort has to go down as particularly disappointing but it's possible that he needed the run to blow away the cobwebs. Barbican and Never Can Tell were reported to have failed to handle the ground, Shubaat's jockey reported that he was never travelling and Kazbow's trainer that the gelding had a breathing problem.
