For much of the straight it appeared that Jamie Spencer was going to pinch this contest with a fine ride from the front aboard Everlong only for VOW to sprout wings in the closing stages and sprint past in the manner of a smart performer. While, the testing conditions - which she's bred to appreciate as a daughter of Motivator - add a necessary note of caution to the form it was hard not to be impressed with the performance while the fact that her stable won a division of this race with subsequent Oaks winner Dancing Rain 12 months ago adds further interest to this debut effort. As a half-sister to Beaten Up and Harris Tweed (both trained by William Haggas), it's reasonable to expect her to improve significantly with age and a stiffer test of stamina while it's not difficult to envisage her progressing markedly from this run given that she was very green throughout and looked likelier to finish nearer last than first for much of the race. She could now head to the Swettenham Stakes back at this course, a race in which Dancing Rain was beaten in before winning at Epsom. Everlong was beaten 10 lengths in the May Hill on her final juvenile start and has certainly trained on; she should certainly be able to pick up an average maiden on this evidence before her sights are raised again. There was a good deal to like about the run of Devine Guest who travelled noticeably well into the race but who couldn't pick up as well as her rivals in the closing stages. She has no fancy entries but could be above average and better ground may help to show her in a better light while she's also bred to stay a trip. Hunt A Mistress reversed last season's course form with Gallipot (who ran better than her finishing position suggests) and is now qualified for handicaps as is Findeln who did more than enough to think that she can win races in that sphere. Sequence and Vickers Vimy weren't disgraced on their returns while Amaraja can be expected to build on this initial effort. Relatively short in the market and with big race entries to her name, she palpably failed to live up to those expectations but was wide throughout and this big filly ran very green and she may well need more time. As such, the Epsom and Irish Oaks are more than likely to come too soon for her but this extremely well bred filly could yet live up to the family name.
