Verdict

Watching this remarkable performer never becomes any less compelling although, in truth, this record-breaking seventeenth consecutive victory was one of his more straightforward. Always travelling well, BIG BUCK'S eased to the head of affairs, was foot-perfect at the last and wasn't unduly extended to score by nine lengths. Connections report that this fine stayer will follow a tried and tested path next season and, with his talents showings no signs of diminishing, it's not difficult to envisage him going through the season unbeaten. Of those to take him on at Cheltenham (a stronger race), only Smad Place turned up for more and Alan King's progressive grey hadn't been asked a question when flicking through the top of the fourth last and stumbling. Although they were still some way from home, he would surely have been second with a clear round and there's a good deal to look forward to with this lightly raced individual. It was marvellous to see Crack Away Jack return to form on his first start for Tom George after three runs for Paul Nicholls. He just didn't get home on his first run over this trip but, turning in, he was travelling better than all bar the winner despite being hampered by the fallers at the eighth. It remains to be seen if he can build on this or, indeed, if connections can keep him sound but on this evidence he's retained his ability and looks very well treated. Across The Bay, a proven stayer, has enjoyed a decent first season for Donald McCain, finishing second in handicaps here and at Haydock. He was the lowest rated runner in the race and probably did no more than run to his mark with the blinkers on for the first time for this stable but deserves his not inconsiderable share of the prize-money for doing so. Tidal Bay lost a lot of ground when hampered but only consented to run on when the race was over in customary fashion. Poungach, having just his sixth start, showed up well for a long way but went out fairly quickly and was ultimately well beaten on his first try at this trip; he's a nice prospect for novice chasing next term.
