Verdict

A fantastic finish and another riding masterclass from Denis O'Regan on board CAPE TRIBULATION, who stuck his head out in determined fashion on the climb to the line. Malcolm Jefferson's inmate had travelled kindly all the way around in mid-division and O'Regan quietly brought him into contention as the field hurtled down the hill to the second last. He poked between rivals as the protagonists straightened up with his pilot keen to hang on to him as long as possible - a good jump at the last just gave him the advantage and he stuck to his guns well driven out to the line. O'Regan said afterwards that he had actually taken a couple of hurdles to warm up and connections were still not entirely sure he would stay this three miles. He answered that last question extremely well and this classy performer finally got a deserved big prize. Catch Me is not the force of old but has dropped to a decent mark and nearly pulled it out of the fire. He got in a bit of a pocket at the top of the hill but made relentless progress once in the clear and only narrowly failed to reel in a gutsy winner. Cantlow ran a super race as well and was just outstayed in the closing stages. He was well in rear until moving smoothly through the pack at the top of the hill and then right into firing line on to the run to the last flight. He had every chance but just found the stamina giving out with a 100 yards left to race. Houblon Des Obeaux was closing on the front three all the way to the line and was far from disgraced while Reindeer Dippin produced another solid display for the Donald McCain team. Sonofvic had not made the transition to fences and looked a fair threat coming down the hill before starting to retreat turning for home. He was well held when taking a tumbling fall at the last, which Reindeer Dippin did well to sidestep. Kayf Aramis and Palace Jester tried to force the issue and were beaten off in the home straight as the rest of the field trailed home strung right across Gloucestershire. Rick did not get up the hill while the redoubtable Buena Vista was being stoked along before the third last and the old fellow did not show the old zip from Festivals past. Our Father could never land a blow while the well-supported Barwell Bridge was pulled up early on the second circuit and something may well have gone amiss. Bellflower Boy proved a triumph of persistence for his young rider Jack Quinlan and he did manage to pick up some places late in the day having been ridden along from an early stage.
