Verdict

Another remarkable chapter in the rise and rise of HUNT BALL as he claimed his latest triumph this season a mere 74 pounds higher then when he started his winning spree back at Folkestone in November. He always had an eye on the front rank for the first circuit before moving into a challenging position coming down the hill for the final time. He had just two rivals in front of him as he turned for home before jumping on two out and striding clear in fantastic style. His has been one of the stories of an already memorable season. His ebullient owner felt afterwards he had won the wrong race - it should have been the Gold Cup he had taken down. Quite where this run will finish is hard to gauge but he is sure to be up near the 160s now and conditions races are well within his range. The remainder were chasing shadows in the closing stages with White Star Line faring best after finding his stride from the third last. Owen Glendower and Battle Group filled the frame - the latter has not looked the most straightforward this season over fences but seemed to find a new lease of life with a pair of blinkers on. Quincy Des Pictons lost his place four out and seemed set to raise the white flag but found a second wind and made up some ground bravely while Triolo d'Alene travelled well to a point but folded pretty tamely in the home straight. Bless The Wings has been in good form but could not land a telling blow. He made a slight mistake at the first and never really seemed to go with much zest - perhaps the going was a bit lively. Carrickboy ran a nice race for the future all things considered and he will be suited by a stiffer test of stamina. The race was won at a decent clip thanks to Cucumber Run, who was lit up by first-time blinkers. There was no way he was going to be able to keep up the pace he set - he made a mistake at the first and his jumping was erratic at times. Charminster was hampered by Cucumber Run at the opening obstacle, was down on his nose and he never really recovered before unseating his rider at the fifth. That'll Do departed a fence earlier when in rear while Educated Evans sadly took a fatal fall two out.
