Verdict

Things rarely go entirely as planned in racing and Menorah's bid for some more match practice before the Cheltenham Festival got no further than the third fence. He hit the first and dropped to the rear behind a very free KID CASSIDY before successfully negotiating the water. That was as good as it got, as he clipped the top of the next obstacle and could not get the landing gear down to give Tom O'Brien no chance. Menorah got up and galloped away and trainer Philip Hobbs later reported from Cheltenham he was none the worse. He is clearly not getting the hang of things over fences at the moment and it is surely impossible to see connections risking him at the Festival in an Arkle on the back of this. The winner is a headstong type but can really gallop. AP McCoy did well to contain his early enthusiasm and managed to get him into a rythym against his remaining rival. There was a scare as he clobbered the sixth but he always had Kumbeshwar at arms length up the home straight despite small errors at the last two fences. Kumbeshwar is game and tried his best to get on terms with Kid Cassidy. The cheekpieces had no obvious effect and he is basically just below being a top-drawer novice chaser. He should thrive once switched to handicap company as his jumping is an asset.
