Verdict

Wayne Hutchinson pinched a few lengths at the start but it didn't make any difference to the end result as his mount Kumbeshwar had to play second-fiddle to MENORAH. The winner jumped out to his left slightly but there is a suspicion that small fields like this just leave him with a bit too much time to think about things. He was quite keen, and moved thrugh to challenge for the lead at the eighth. He was sticky at the next but his pace took him away from Kumbeshwar turning in. He guessed at the second-last but sailed the final fence and was well in charge at the line. His jumping isn't as bad as people make out, and as long as Johnson glues himself in the saddle then the pair should stay together during the Arkle. Bookies weren't impressed, but he's getting there. Kumbeshwar is a good rival and he provided a solid test, although errors at the third and then the third last certainly didn't help. He's got the size to carry weight and would be of interest in handicaps at the Festival, and when giving weight to lesser horses. Alasi fluffed her lines at the eighth and Dominic Elswoth went west; she was creeping into the race at the time.
