Verdict

A thrilling conclusion to a dramatic race with the drama beginning before the contest had begun with top-weight Woolcombe Folly withdrawn by the starter as his cheekpieces had been removed having left the paddock and replaced at the start, contravening the regulations. QUANTITATIVEEASING jumped adequately but not faultlessly and looks sure to benefit from being stepped up in trip where they will go that bit slower and it was his stamina that won him the day with a powerpacked finish. He didn't get home in the Irish National last summer (which appeared to be something of an afterthought to his season) but it would be a surprise if he wasn't running over three miles by the time that this season's out and he should be able to win again once reassessed with improvement to come over that trip. Medermit produced a fine run under a big weight and ran right up to his best following a slightly lacklustre showing at Ascot. The Ryanair Chase is an obvious end of season target for the grey who will be competing at his fourth successive Festival if lining up with his Supreme second comfortably his best performance to date. Roudoudou Ville can certainly be considered unlucky as his rider lost his irons at the tenth when hampered by Great Endeavour and, according to his trainer, got lit up when Andrew Glassonbury replaced his foot. He tied up agonisingly on the hill having appeared to have sealed the race at the last where his jockey saw a great stride but this was an admirable run from a very progressive performer and it would be no surprise to see him bid for compensation back here next month. I'msingingtheblues is a consistent performer and ran a solid race without ever threatening with similar comments applying to Calgary Bay who ran to a similar level of form as when fourth 12 months previously although Henrietta Knight's runner does have a modest strike rate. Ghizao ran a strange race, quickly losing his early prominent position before making taking headway on to the heels of the leaders before dropping out again. A lack of stamina could be to blame though he hasn't always convinced and remains something of an enigma but he is very good on his day and could well bounce back. Tatenen made a respectable return to action and Mad Moose showed up well for a long way in company that looks too stiff for him at present while Roberto Goldback ran a little better than the bare form suggests having got outpaced on ground that would have been too fast for him. Matuhi's best form is on flatter tracks and this should have blown away the cobwebs and he was the least fancied of the Pipe runners. Great Endeavour was showing no signs of suffering from his recent exertions when walking through the tenth and that massive mistake inevitably told in the closing stages. Salut Flo was well backed on this return from injury and was by no means done with when making a mistake at the third last after which he was allowed to come home in his own time. He looks potentially well treated but the cat is rather out of the bag. Divers was ridden more prominently than has often been the case and his form with the winner would have entitled connections to believe that he'd have been involved in the finish if running up to his best. There was a wholesale gamble on Sunnyhillboy but his supporters never looked like collecting and he was found to have had an irregular heart rhythm by the Veterinary Officer on his return.
