Verdict

Pandorama and Pizarro have been the best recent winners of this Grade Two contest and connections will be hoping that the highly-regarded MOUNT BENBULBEN can go all the way to the top. A winning pointer who won two out of his three bumpers, changed hands for 250,000 euros after his defeat of Lovethehigherlaw in March. He slipped up when clipping heels on his hurdling bow before winning his maiden with ease. This was a step up in class and trip and he was easy to back close to the off but he jumped well settled in behind the pacesetting Rebel Fitz and was the only horse able to go with the runner-up when the pace quickened. He responded well to pressure and was well on top at the line and rates a very useful prospect. He has yet to race on a decent surface which raises a question mark for the spring Festivals which will be his ultimate aim this season while his long-term future lies over fences. Rebel Fitz's slick hurdling had been a feature of his previous successes but he wasn't helped by jumping out to his right at the obstacles. However, he only just failed to give the weight away to his six rivals and had the remainder in trouble as he quickened the pace from the front. This was a smart performance in his hat-trick attempt on ground that was probably testing enough for him and he's fully capable of winning in this company. There was market support for Texas Jack, Jetson and Make A Track. The previously unbeaten Texas Jack was held-up in rear but his hurdling lacked fluency and he failed to pick up when the pace quickened. He had done his winning on the bit prior to this and it's possible that his lack of a 'race' found him out on this step up in class. There's no escaping that this was disappointing but the experience may well bring him on and there will be other days. Make A Track had finished just under two lengths behind Noel Meade's runner at Clonmel although the winner was value for a good deal more than the winning margin. While the weight of money suggests that someone believed Make A Track had improved since that run it's hard to get away from the impression that Texas Jack failed to give his running. Jetson impressed on winning a bumper on debut but took six attempts to open his account over hurdles (on debut for current connections) although the form looked solid with the second winning earlier in the week. However, he was already in trouble when making a mistake two from home and was found wanting on this step up in grade.
