Verdict

Another impressive display from OVERTURN who had accounted for, possibly fortuitously, Binocular's stablemate Oscar Whisky the previous Saturday and there was no fortune about this performance which saw him readily account for the former Champion Hurdler. Adopting his customary position at the head of affairs, he was allowed an uncontested lead and took the field along at a sensible pace. It briefly looked as though Binocular may be able to launch a challenge as he attempted to move into the winner's slipstream two from home but he never quite got there and was soon left floundering. Overturn had racefitness on his side but has produced two of his best performances over hurdles on his last two starts but it's hard to believe that there is a huge amount more to come from the seven year old. He was some way short of the best over two miles last season and it's difficult to envisage him closing the gap but he has certainly made hay while the sun shines. He stays well on the Flat and is unexposed over further and it will be interesting to see if connections opt to step him up to three miles. Binocular has been beaten on his seasonal reappearance in this race for the last two seasons (held at Newbury last term) and it could simply be that he needs a run under his belt in order to be seen at his best. Connections have suggested that he could be in for a busier campaign although he will adopt the same path as in previous years and will now head for the Christmas Hurdle, a race in which he readily accounted for Overturn last year. He hurdled well but it was still a shade disappointing that he didn't maintain his challenge for longer even allowing for a lack of sharpness. Celestial Halo is capable on his day and had run well at Wincanton but was never at the races and may not have enjoyed being restrained; he can bounce back in the right company.
