Verdict

A surprise result to an Arc that was run in course record time in which the draw once again proved significant. However, take nothing away from the German trained filly DANEDREAM who beat a high-class field in terrific fashion to justify the faith that connections had shown in her in supplementing on Thursday. The Lomitas filly dispelled any doubts about her form in Germany in authoritative fashion, making some top-class rivals look positively leaden-footed; always well placed, she put the race to bed in a matter of strides to provide her trainer with the biggest victory of a long and successful career. She is versatile with regard to underfoot conditions and may be given the chance to further enhance her reputation at the Breeders' Cup and will reportedly stay in training next year where a globetrotting campaign may well be in the offing as it's surely worth the experiment in dropping her back to ten furlongs given the way she travelled and quickened. Shareta was in the line-up as a pacemaker for stablemate Sarafina and did her job effectively to gain some more valuable black type having finished third in the Prix Vermeille. Snow Fairy has gradually recaptured her best form this season and ran another admirable race, doing best of those held-up. She was being ridden to hold a position turning into the straight as the pace quickened and she tracked the winner through but was never travelling with the same ease. So You Think was never nearer than at the line having been dropped in at rear from his high draw. He proved tenacious in staying on but was another who made rather laboured progress up the straight, grinding out the ground rather than flashing home; a trip to the Breeders' Cup could now be on the agenda. St Nicholas Abbey has been made to look rather onepaced at the top level this season and that impression was again confirmed. He was given every chance by his jockey, taking up the running at the top of the straight but was readily outpointed in the run to the line. There's a potential gap in his stable's staying division and he could be just the type to excel in Cup races. Meandre travelled well on the outside in midfield but wasn't good enough on the day. Sarafina may have been further back than connections had preferred from her high draw and was a fraction keen early. She was produced to challenge on the outside but didn't quicken in her customary manner and flattened out a little close home. Galikova had impressed on softer ground in the Prix Vermeille but never threatened and had no real excuses although connections had intimated that this race was something of an afterthought following the ease of her trial victory and expect her to progress again next season. Hiruno D'Amour looked to have a big chance from a low draw on fast ground but he had no more to offer in the straight having held an ideal racing position throughout. Last year's runner-up Nakayama Festa was having only his second start since being injured in the Japan Cup and was never able to land a blow, staying on from off the pace. Workforce proved bitterly disappointing having pleased in his work since Ascot; connections have always voiced their concerns about fast ground and it may be that the conditions were to blame. Reliable Man was another whose trainer had grave concerns regarding the conditions and the French Derby winner never looked happy and was soon beaten. Treasure Beach appeared to be sacrificed by connections here, setting a strong gallop that was always going to be difficult to maintain and he paid the price. Masked Marvel was supplemented having appeared to come out of his win in the St Leger in good shape but it's possible that that victory had left more of a mark than had initially appeared to be the case.
