Verdict

DREAM AHEAD's connections have avoided quick ground throughout his career but with a career at stud looming opted to take their chance and they were rewarded in spades. Flash Dance set a decent pace for her illustrious stablemate Goldikova who was making her final appearance in France and there were no excuses. William Buick was always travelling comfortably aboard Dream Ahead, just behind and on the outside of Goldikova and was always ideally placed to follow her every move. The pair were soon locking horns with the mare (who had moved easily into the lead on the inside as her pacemaker made way) and just prevailed in a terrific tussle to gain a first win over this trip on his final start. David Simcock had expected his colt to continue to improve as a four year old and it's rather a shame that racegoers will be denied the opportunity to see the son of Diktat in action again as it seems unlikely that we have seen the best of him. Indeed, he has probably signed off on a career high with this defeat of the multiple Group One winning mare and it was interesting that he didn't hang as he has done on almost every other career start. Goldikova is vulnerable over this trip, a furlong short of her optimum, and had been beaten in this race in 2009 before making amends 12 months ago on ground that was softer than ideal. She moved into contention travelling strongly and lost little in defeat against a high-class rival. She will now head to America to attempt to win a record fourth consecutive Breeders' Cup Mile and it would take a brave person to back against her claiming victory on her swansong as this remarkable mare is running as well as ever. The pair outclassed the remainder in a Group One which lacked genuine top-level performers and it was Surfrider who picked up third place on his first start since finishing well beaten in the French Guineas in May. He has already won a Group Three and this lightly raced colt should be able to achieve further Pattern level success if kept in training at four. Bewitched had been found wanting on her previous two forays at this level and this was again the case. Worthadd had been viewed in many quarters as a lively outsider having briefly given Canford Cliffs a scare at Newbury in May but he had disappointed on his first run since the end of that month in the Jacques-le-Marois and was again a long way below his best. He has looked capable of winning a Group One in Italy where he's trained but has something to prove after two lacklustre performances. Marchand D'Or was never a factor on ground that may have been faster than ideal while Dever Dream broke down.
