Verdict

There's a tendency to knock the form of a contest which produces a bunch finish whilst the proximity of a five-race maiden in Nayarra could certainly be used to hold the form down but the winner, at least, looks potentially smart. A slowly run race appeared to be against REGAL REALM at Ascot last time and connections must have feared the worst with the pace here only steady. Jimmy Fortune was always travelling strongly but had to switch to his left after Rakasa edged right and closed a gap that he was eyeing up at the two pole; he then had to switch right again and still had nowhere to go so moved off the rail again with half a furlong to run and his filly picked up really well to challenge on the outside of Rakasa and a good attitude to maintain her run as Nayarra rolled to her right to reduce the amount of room she had. She was only in front on the line but was value for a good deal more than the winning margin and connections are now eyeing up the Fillies' Mile where she'll be well worth her place in the line-up. There were mixed messages from the form of the maiden that Rakasa had run on well to land at the course in July but she performed creditably on this step up in class. She was always in the right place and saw out this longer trip well enough but didn't display the same acceleration as the winner; she's entitled to improve and a stronger pace may help to show her in a better light but this looks her level for the time being. Questing was a shade keen under restraint early but soon settled well enough to cut out the running. She was just run out of it close home but it's worth noting that John Gosden had won with his previous two runners in this race; Sense Of Joy never raced again but Nannina went on to win two Group Ones and it would be dangerous to assume that we've seen the best of this Fillies' Mile entry who was having just her second start. She showed a good turn of foot to win her maiden and may fare better with a decent pace to chase rather than trying to wind it up from the front as she did here. Lily's Angel has been a marvellous servant to connections through the season but she wasn't seen to her best advantage on this track with a steady pace.
