Verdict

MOST IMPROVED was all the rage in the betting following his encouraging introduction over C&D three weeks previously and didn't let his supporters down with a commanding performance. He has plenty of size and scope about him and holds entries in all the top juvenile contests and it was hard not to be impressed with the manner of his victory although it remains to be seen how much strength in depth there was to this race. The Racing Post Trophy is now firmly on his trainer's agenda. Welcome Gift appeared to be the stable's third string on jockey bookings but this Pivotal colt out of a winner in Germany relished the ground (which was later changed to soft) to come from the rear of the field to chase the winner home. This was an encouraging start to his career and he should stay middle distances next season. Goldream was sent off at a big price in a warm maiden on debut and took another step forwards here. He is being brought along gradually and could make up into a useful handicapper next year. Alshmemi was an expensive purchase but had only beaten one rival home on debut in the maiden contested by the winner. However, he was the chosen mount of Richard Hills and produced a performance more in keeping with his price tag without being given too hard a time; he should have more to offer. Hefner had the run of the race from the front and the benefit of a run and could only plug on at the one pace; he'll be qualified for nurseries after another outing and could start life in handicaps on a fair mark. Trois Vallees and the quietly ridden Bank Bonus shaped with promise in making ground from the rear of the field. Mayo Lad travelled better than many for a long way whilst Alwaaqi and Gregorian shaped better than their finishing positions suggest.
