Verdict

The going was changed to good to soft after the opening race. Havant made a winning debut for Sir Michael Stoute in a division of this race 12 months ago and Shada was made favourite to follow suit. She made good progress to contest the lead but came under pressure with over two furlongs to run and weakened close home as though this run was needed. She has a Fillies Mile entry and can be expected to strip fitter next time with a step up in trip likely to suit on paper. LYRIC OF LIGHT is out of a runner-up in the Cheveley Park Stakes so could have been expected to make a juvenile and is from a yard that can ready a newcomer. Covered up early, she gradually improved her position once pulled out and quickened well to take up the running. She drifted off a true line once or twice in the final furlong and still looked to be full of running when passing the post - her stable house some smart juvenile fillies this season and it will be interesting to see where she ranks in the pecking order. The eyecatcher of the race was Diala who would surely have given the winner more to do granted a stronger ride. She was travelling strongly but her rider delayed her challenge - allowing the winner first run - before committing her to home. A maiden win should be a formality granted normal improvement and she could be above average with another furlong unlikely to hold any fears. Fashion's Flight is from a smart American family and had shown promise on debut; she raced handily but lost her position before staying on again and may need a longer trip/better ground. Bana Wu and Tortempo were both noted making impressive late headway and both can be expected to step up on this over further with the experience under their belts. Quizzed missed the break and ran green but wasn't beaten too far and should benefit from the outing. Marhoona finished closer to Fashion's Flight than she had on debut but didn't improve as much as the market anticipated; the rain may have been against her. Show Flower arguably set the standard but is beginning to look exposed.
