Verdict

A very competitive race for the grade that included last year's winner Strawberrydaquiri who was having her first start for Brian Meehan and her first since running behind Presvis in the Dubai Duty Free in March. She was not disgraced in midfield in a race where the field came across to race up the stands' side but her stablemates THEYSKEN'S THEORY and Brevity finished in front of her. The winner was a smart juvenile and had scored impressively on quick ground at York on her reappearance, albeit in a race that hasn't worked out particularly well. She struggled to make an impact in the Coronation Stakes subsequently but bounced back in this drop in grade. She made progress from the rear of the field to give chase with a couple of furlongs to run and kept on gamely in the centre of the track; she's versatile with regard to underfoot conditions and connections are now keen to step her back up in class with the Sun Chariot nominated as a potential target - last year's Fillies' Mile third looks a cut above this level and is well worth another chance in the top tier. Modeyra has been lightly raced but had won a 10f Listed race on her reappearance last season (her first start in a year) from subsequent Group One winner Timepiece. This was just the fourth start of her career and, if she proves easier to train, there should be more to come from her particularly when stepped back up in trip. Brevity was ridden by her stable jockey and was also having her first start of the season. A six furlong Listed winner on fast ground as a juvenile, she kept on well without threatening the first two home and is entitled to come on for the outing; she is also in the Sun Chariot and this looks to be her trip. Lay Time was well supported as she made the step up in grade after just one start in handicap company and posted a career best performance. She is related to a number of black type performers and shouldn't be long in gaining some for herself on this evidence, possibly over a longer trip. Off Chance is a consistent mare who was ridden a shade more prominently than usual - this looks to be as good as she is. Humdrum had been fancied to run well in the Sandringham but made little impression there or in this contest. She did face a tough task at the weights but will need to improve if she's to gain some black type. Heavenly Dawn could have been expected to relish the easy conditions but she failed to build on a solid third in this grade at Haydock last time; she's had a relatively busy summer and can be given another chance.
