Verdict

All the money before the race was for John Gosden's colt FENCING and the support was rewarded in solid style. Having shaped nicely on debut at Newmarket, the son of Street Cry built on that effort and further enhanced his trainer's fine record in this race. He tracked the pace set by Leqqaa and the Richard Hannon pair, before being angled out for a run with just less than three furlongs to go. He looked green when asked to make his challenge, but once hitting the front he continued to grind his way to the line. Telwaar launched a strong challenge with a furlong to run but he fended him off quite readily and then surged clear near the wining post. He has plenty of stamina on his dam's side, and although he attracted Guineas quotes, the feeling is that the Derby is a more likely prize. His dam won the Prix Diane so 10 furlongs should easily be in his range, although connections suggested he will stay over this trip for the time being. Runner-up Telwaar had the most experience coming into the race and he ran very well. The son of Haafhd travelled very strongly in midfield and looked likely to play a major hand when the pace quickened, however he could never quite reel in the winner. He seemed to appreciate the return to this trip and a mile should be no problem to him before long. The first two pulled well clear of the third home, Leqqaa, who set a strong enough pace. He looked a bit more streetwise here than his previous run and although well-held in the end, he will take some pegging back when his sights are slightly lowered. Rougemont was very disappointing. He had made a fine impression when winning at Newmarket but having tracked the pace, the response when asked to quicken was less than expected. He dropped away quite tamely into fifth, and the feeling is that he may have resented being asked to go quicker than he was comfortable with. He's stoutly bred, and having won his maiden at 25/1, he may just need more time. It's also possible that he was feeling something, as jockey Richard Hughes let him come home in his own time. In the end stablemate Mister Music finished a place ahead of him. He hung to his left when hit with the whip and looked pretty green despite having already had three runs. Shivsingh found things far too tough on debut and along with Fosters Road was easily beaten off by halfway.
